Can you e-file a return in a year one spouse dies and the remaining person would sign as "surviving spouse?"

Yes, but I use Form 8453 and send it to the IRS, because four years ago, the IRS requested Forms 8453 for two of my clients who had filed as a surviving spouse, in which I had used Form 8879 for both. I think the IRS doesn't believe the decedent could choose a PIN.
