| Like almost every year, (mainly because ProSeries pricing is always unpredictable) we are shopping around for SW. We have been using ProSeries Pro since 2005 (before we had TaxACT since 2002) and have no complains at all on many individual, business and efiling areas we been into. Also we deeply like the seamless import feature it has with QuickBooks file (although Lacerte does it even better), but ProSeries has tripled its prices since our first year with them and that’s something we find difficult to sustain or to justified. ATX looks like a good contender, and discussion on this forum has been very informative about feedbacks from you, but still the level of uncertainty is high. DRAKE on the other side, we find it very awkward if you are used to work with forms vs. filling blanks in data entry windows and then been force to see the form separately to check the results and if the result are OK, (although this method force the preparer to review the final forms instead of relaying on just the software, as we all eventually do).
Preparing taxes is already a very complex task to do, and software should be a tool to help you on calculations, transfer figures between forms, be sure conditioned benefits and/or obligations complied with their conditions, keep history of carryforward and carrybacks, AMT calculations, etc. but all software should do the same except that each one does it differently (forms vs data entry) and that “…way…” is what makes one software different from any other. We like the seamless import from QuickBooks file very much but, does it worth the price? I am not cheap, but I don't like to waste money either. I guess I should have also stated that I don't care for any 'import' feature because I don't have any clients who do perfect bookeeping. | |

| Thank you Kevin, I know perfectly what you mean with QuickBooks and customers keeping it. Intuit, with QuickBooks, figure it our a way to "look" friendly, but extremely sensible to make things mixed up very easily.
Kevin, If you allow me to ask, and after reading your slogan "...a tax software is no substitute for a good professional ..." Makes me believe that you have use many of them and now you are indifferent to what software to use, am I right? Do you have some conclusions on some of them? Thank you in advance.

| My slogan is in response to the tax preparers (many of whom have designations leading the publc to think that they know what they are doing) who have gotten lazy and let the software do their thinking. I'm a big believer in getting education and knowing how something (like AMT) is supposed to work BEFORE you plug anything into the software.
And I'm firmly against believing an ordinary 'caveman' can pick up quicken or quickbooks and do the job that a professional can do. For many years I refused to even buy a version of Quickbooks myself because I couldn't see supporting a firm who took money out of my wallet by selling Turbotax to end users. But then I gave in and purchased Lacerte when they took over Taasc (or whatever it was 12 or 13 years ago). When I sold my larger practice that justified Lacerte's fees, and started a new practice with far fewer returns, I went to another software firm. I have also purchased/merged with firms using other software. When I tried to 'convert' these offices to the same software I used there was a huge revolt (yes, my employees were revolting). It is so hard to switch (the cigarette ad for Tarryton comes to mind). | |

| Well Kevin thank you very much for your feedback and personal experience on this topic, looks like there is still a lot of wood to crunch before we end it up with a fair solution, but is like one of those things, we need it and we hate it at the same time, specially considering that the Tax Code gets darker and more creative almost every minute. | |

Ain't that the truth, but go into Staples and see the racks loaded with Quickbooks. The true definition of the blind leading the blind is seeing a sales rep answering questions from some guy in workmen's coveralls about QB. | |

| Spend the money and get the best software available for you needs. Stop trying to save a few hundred dollars. Take your energy and pick up a few more clients to cover the added costs. You will have less stress if you forget about the money and have a software that streamlines the tax processing. Having a high vol tax office makes that a key decision. | |

| Definately don't go the cheap route - the better software with save you time and money in the long run and will help you do a better job for your clients. | |

| Several years ago I was checking out software that gets lots of raves, and is cheap, but found there was a limit of 12 W-2s to be entered, and I have at least ten clients with more than that. Right there and then, I said 'not for me.' In the old days, I would have created a spreadsheet for multiple W-2s, but efiling would not be an option. Today I would not want to paper file these, if only for the time spent copying and collating the paper return. | |

| This year I am switching...mainly because of cost...ProSeries costs me more and more every year and I buy so many of Intuit's products that I should get a break!!!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
So, now I have Ultratax and Drake both beating down my door for unlimited along with write up, etc. What say you all? I am still trying to build a business and want ease of use, but also want something intuitive. Wish I could write my own software program!!! | |

| I am a satisfied UltraTax user for 5 years now - when they bought out Microvision's TaxRelief customers.
Their tech support is SUPER - that's why I keep renewing with them. They have a whole host of accounting software programs that integrate with each other. | You are Uncle?
I used to use Creative Solutions for years in large firms, but the cost was so high (pre y2K) that I could not afford it. Write up solution, CBS, Payroll solution, Ultratax, Depreciation Solution...they were all the best I had ever used. Only problem I have is that they don't use any browsers except for IE. I tried with Firefox and it doesn't work. Any comments on Drake? I have to make a decision this week. Crunching numbers but I want to get away from Quick Books if I can for write up.... | |

| I use AOL with Cablevision - haven't had any problems.
I realized a long time ago (when Microvision sold to UT) that to shop around for price - savings would only be temporary. Eventually the big corporations will buy out the small ones - and that is what's happening year after year (ATX bought by CCH, etc), and the program learning curve starts all over. Drake does not have a toll-free number for tech support - and some long time Drake users I know from another Board switched this past year primarily due to service - not that the product wasn't adequate. | |

| I get to use my uncle's Ultra even though he is in another state. I use PC Anywhere to access a terminal he has set up for me. Works good, and no problems so far. | |

| Uncle - great to hear from another old Microvision customer. I have met few people who used that software but was always very happy with it. I too like Ultra tax and feel that their tech support is top notch. Also echo what others have said about not being stingy when it comes to software unless you are really planning to keep your practice small. | |
