wording on charitable in engagement letter
Hi Belle,
I would love to see your wording on the charitable requirements.
Are you a CPA? I'm still using the canned version of the engagement letter that I received years ago. Probably no one reads it to the end anymore.
Or did you say you added it to LaCerte's questionnaire.
thanks so much, Judy

Spreadsheet,
Belle, sure I will be glad to share that with you. The price is $1,000,000 but it is deeply discounted this week leaving a net cost of your undying love and admiration! ;-). Keep in mind that it is specific to my client who has some pretty specific tax issues and similary tailored towards GA state. However, it would be a good start that will help you figure out your client information. Shoot me your email addy in my discussion area and I will email it to you. I will also send a good calendar that gave me the idea, which is tailored more generically. I am just a mental case that has to have it in excel spreadsheet form to understand it! 8-)

Hi Belle, looks like you're getting a lot of bites on your offer. Please consider me another (biter)...i would appreciate you sending one to me at PJ.Sinclair@sbcglobal.net. Much Thanks!
like-kind exchanges
Hi Belle. I decided to send you a personal response because I think I would get roundly criticized for the way we decided to approach this. :) We could not get Lacerte to do this right - it used to be that in an older version you could just check "traded in" and enter the trade in allowance, and it would do all the calcs just right. Now with the wizard, it doesn't give you that category and I just can't get it to work out right for a less than 100% business use vehicle. I also don't want to spend too much time on this and have to bill the client for all my fiddling around in Lacerte.
So what we decided to do is treat the old vehicle as having been sold for no gain or loss, even tho it was traded in at a loss. I took 67% (% business use) of the trade in allowance and applied it to the ending basis of the old (traded in) vehicle. This gave me the loss of approx $2000.
I took 67% of the cost of the new vehicle and added to that amount the loss on the old vehicle of %2000. This gave me my new depreciable basis. But I can't put that in as the original cost of my new vehicle with 100% business use because it won't calculate deprecation with auto limits properly. So I grossed up my depreciable basis so that the depreciable basis would amount to 67% of an original cost for depreciation purposes. I then entered in the new "original cost" of the new vehicle manually, and entered 67% business use. This gave me my correct new depreciable basis.
We decided not to prepare the 8824 even though you are really supposed to do that, only because we couldn't get the beginning basis of the new vehicle on the 8824 to match what we had grossed up our cost to be.
Also, I tried to link the 2 assets in Lacerte using the like-kind wizard, and it did correctly compute the depreciation for the year with the auto limits in place, but it also called my new vehicle "boot", which is not what I wanted it to reflect on the tax return!
So that is our work-around that's probably not totally correct, because of not filing the 8824, but at least we are getting our basis and depreciation right.
Let me know if you are able to come up with a better way to do this. Thanks.

Part of the Country
Belle: What part of the country are you in? As you can tell, I'm down South. I mentioned florists and dry cleaners... I actually have some of these as clients, and these people are hurting badly. That means to me that middle class people are buying groceries and gasoline, trying to pay the mtg., and then watching cable and nothing else! CrowJD 20:30, 1 April 2008 (CDT)
Approaching Tim....
I sent a message to Tim about him yesterday. This person is on my one last good nerve right now. The advice is dangerous. No citations, no authority. Justs posts with no credibility and some has been wrong. If you want to chime in as well, please do and share your thoughts with Tim so I don't look like the only one who is on a crusade. This person is beginning to scare me. TomTaocpa 10:19, 2 April 2008 (CDT)
Thanks
Belle - Thanks. That last piece of advice about the insurance agency sale was so wrong. However, I am not answering questions with no profile. Ever since I posted that message in the discussion a couple of weeks back Discussion:MESSAGE TO NON TAX PROS AND DO IT YOURSELFERS, I am sticking to it. I am not a mean, nasty person (trust me I am not) but I am sick of these non-pros and pros who can't abide by the rules. I've noticed Riley2 disappeared and I hope it's not because of this stuff. He's so darn good. So is Kevin and others who you can rely on. I felt so bad over something I did to one person here I recently spoke to her on the phone to help her with a problem she had with a client. She's a good kid who is struggling to learn and I really messed up.
But I refuse to help someone who says they are a pro and won't take two minutes to complete a profile. And I won't keep trying to clean up behind this user if this keeps up. It's not my job. But I might put up a post about it. TomTaocpa 10:44, 2 April 2008 (CDT)

Thanks Belle. I've been researching so many returns this year until I am blue in the face, I am two weeks behind. I spend time here to continually update myself. There are things even after 20+ years I don't know. So I spend a couple of hours a day here to keep my mind sharp and I love the friendship even if it is online. At least it's a professional site and not something else. TomTaocpa 11:03, 2 April 2008 (CDT)

Hi Belle I am an attorney in New York who assists clients with taxes during tax season. Nice to meet you. If anyone can tell me where I report S125 on the tax return or even if it is necessary to be reported. Also what does 3PSP stand for and where do I report that on 1040.
Hijackerer
You did hijack my thread and you shouldn't mention stroking when talking to me, you know how I get.
Multi-tasking
I just noticed your question about reading while driving. I read the traffic signs if that is what you mean. I'm not sure I understand your question. I ride my bike a lot, and I see a lot of things drivers do while they are supposed to be driving. I've had people coming toward me who have crossed over into my lane. If you really think about it, it's scary knowing all that it would take is two seconds of reaching for a cup of coffee or a cell phone (or any other distraction) for someone to plow into a bicyclist or pedestrian and change that person's life forever.Natalie 02:27, 16 April 2008 (CDT)Natalie
Ah, yes, I did mention the book, "It's No Accident." It's about how government is making crashes "safer" but not reducing them. It also talks about statistics and how they can be manipulated. For example, they will use accidents per mile of road. Well, they keep increasing the miles, so even if accidents stay the same, it sounds as though the rate has gone down. And to answer your question, no, I don't read it while driving. Actually, the only place I really get to do any driving is in the bathroom. Shhhh.

Hi Belle, let me know
Hi, listen, let me know what happens to your clients on the 9465 attached to the return, if you think about it~ My client just got his letter this week demanding pmt for all taxes, so we will see if your clients get the same thing soon, or an accepted agreement. Take care. CrowJD 14:47, 30 May 2008 (CDT)
Hi
Please email H and R Block fees to Ron@glassbergmermer.com
Thanks
Belle one thing I noticed
Well, I got around to reading the instructions carefully on the Installment Request. It's a confusing form, and the instructions are not real clear. But, towards the end of the instructions, it does say to put the 9465 on the front of the return. I did not do that, I included it in what I thought was proper order. So, they probably just ignored it.
So, yours could have sailed thru. We shall see. CrowJD 20:49, 4 June 2008 (CDT)
H & R Block Excell Pricing Spreadsheet
Hello Belle,
From the looks of it you have already gotten a ton of requests for the Block pricing spreadsheet. If you would not mind e mailing it to me, I would greatly appreciate it.
I am a Suburban Chicago area Accountant/CFP who generally charges per IRS form/schedule (based on an estimated time of completion times $75/hr). I always end up later discounting what I consider an already reasonable fee to please the client.
I'd like to see how my fee compares with Block's (which I already know is higher).
Thanks much for your consideration!

Air Rights discussion
Belle, take another look at the Air Rights Discussion. Roy has posted an interesting Google link. It doesn't take much time to take a look a couple of the items. It's amazing what can be bought and sold. I'm challenged on adding the little diddy with my name. So have a great day - Paula (Actionbsns)
Agreeing with BLRG!
HAHA! Yep, you caught me, it's a rare thing. She's a bit of a time saver usually, since whenever I see her post, I know that it requires clean up and probably is incorrect. Or irrelevant. I hate to say that since I've been wrong more than most, but she is usually NEVER right! I guess my distaste is beginning to show..... Jeff
Sorry for the late response...i am located in Orange County
Yes, up and raising hell, lol
Belle, it really is going to be interesting. There is nothing these Republicans won't pull at this point. I would not be surprised if we end up in some kind of military skirmish (Iran?) to take the folks' mind off this awful economy. Well, hope springs enternal, I hope. Normally
Belle, normally I'm not one for doomsday, in fact, in 2000, I would never have thought this way, but then there was Bush and gang. LOL. Watch and see (and hopefully we will not see, but..), just watch and see what transpires over these next two months! Take care. CrowJD 23:30, 6 September 2008 (CDT)
Hi Belle!
Belle,
Thanks for the kind words.
My guess is it's Obama's to lose and the Democrats will control both Houses of Congress based on what I've seen. I shudder at that idea just as I shudder at a Republican President with Republican control of both Houses of Congress.
If you have time, check these links out. The first is from pollster John Zogby, whom I know is pretty reputable (although he did blow the 2004 Election by picking Kerry over Bush to win the Electoral vote):
I also picked up CNN's map just for kicks:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/06/10/electoral.map/
Here's what the NY Times weighs in with as well:
http://elections.nytimes.com/2008/president/whos-ahead/key-states/map.html
My gut tells me Zogby is probably more right than CNN or NY Times. I want to check with a former co-worker who follows this stuff really well and is an election guru.
Enjoy!
TomTaocpa 13:12, 7 September 2008 (CDT)
Shudder, indeed!
I don't like to vote that way either and I don't plan on it. My problem is I live in the DC area, so we get a full dose of this stuff. Also, I've said this before, but I worked near Capitol Hill for a think-tank that had very serious political connections to many administrations. I learned a lot from it. My dad also wrote a lot of legislation and testified before Congress. He dealt a lot with congressman and staff who just had no clue about some things. He had a few dealings with the White House (especially a very famous incident. They consulted his agency, his agency sent the White House calls to him, they ignored his advice (he wrote the law) and ignited a huge controversy.).
RoyDaleOne is the one who made the tongue-in-cheek comment which is appropriate. I also laugh when I see the popularity polls because they mean nothing. Electoral vote counts.
I am doing better. You probably saw my long post. But I needed to get some things out there to let people know not everything is bad. It's actually been pretty good. I have no complaints.
I hit my 9/15 deadline. Now it's onto 10/15. I also managed to complete my CPE so I could renew my license by 9/16. I was happy about that. I was able to do most of that online fortunately.
Talk with you soon.
